As newlyweds, home furnishing soon becomes a very important part of your family budget. There are items that you really cannot do without – a bed, some chairs, a table, etc. – and all of them cost money. Some newlyweds are lucky and inherit some furniture pieces from family as gifts. But it is almost guaranteed that those pieces aren’t what the newly married couple wants and they will soon be replacing them with things that are more their own style. Perhaps the biggest concern after the wedding is considering how to furnish their home or apartment within their budget. Once a furnishings budget has been established, the couple can get serious about furnishing their home together.
Used furniture can be a fantastic buy if you find the style you want. Used furniture normally costs less than half of what you would spend in a furniture store. Check out second hand stores for various home furnishing items, too. Great deals on quality pieces can be found if you are patient. If the couple is thinking about furniture for a baby, remember to check for quality and safety in used furnishings. Safety standards have become much stricter over the years to protect newborns and these new restrictions weren’t in place when older cribs were built.
An honest look at a couple’s checking account will let them know whether they can afford leather or if they need to stay with some of the newer and very nice microfiber materials that are available. If they are considering wood pieces, pine can be a more affordable choice than oak and can be finished to mimic oak wood for a very attractive and affordable alternative. Keeping in mind that the pieces they purchase as newlyweds will need to go with them when they are first time home buyers should also help eliminate some furniture decisions as well as make other selections more attractive. For most, home furnishing is an ongoing process, especially in the first years of marriage.
Some couples are fortunate enough to have received starting home furnishing or decorating pieces as wedding gifts. These can be a starting point as they accumulate other furniture to make a cohesive decor in their new home. It is critical for a couple to keep in mind that their apartment rent or mortgage has to be considered when making any purchases, especially if they are buying on credit. Starting off married life in so much debt that they cannot enjoy their new home or each other is not the way to live happily never after.
